Program

WORKSHOPportraying daisies with oil transfer

We are able to distinguish almost any human face, but can we look at something else, like a flower, in the same way? During this workshop, you will work under the guidance of artist Stijn Pommée to create an oil transfer, a very practical and accessible printing technique. We will make portraits of daisies with the same attention and concentration with which we can look at human faces. At the end of the workshop, you will have a collection of very different portraits and a new understanding of an interesting drawing method.

OPEN STUDIO – PolakVanBekkum

Artist duo PolakVanBekkum is staying as artist-in-residence at Drawing Centre Diepenheim. During Drawing Garden, they invite you to take a look at their studio and gain insight into their process. During their stay in Diepenheim, the duo is taking a new step in their project “Grazing Choreographs,” in which they explore the grazing patterns of cows. In their imagination, the artists move over the pastures like a drone to capture the animals’ routes in drawings.

Times: noon – 5 p.m.
Price: included in entrance ticket

PERFORMANCE – Polishing

Amidst the works in the exhibition “the sketch, its realization & its lovers,” Hee Sub Han is hidden. During his performance, he polishes carbohydrate-rich products into smooth objects with great dedication and concentration. Bread, lasagna, pasta and rice are transformed from mass to surface and from line to point. Are you left in confusion? Hee is happy to talk to you about his work and diligent labor.

MODEL FEATURES – Nice Flaps

Among the flowers and plants, the artist initiative Nice Flaps is hosting an experimental model drawing session, where you can join them throughout. You are welcome to join us as we draw a live model, playfully leading us through the garden in various poses. The model is dressed in artist Caz Egelie’s lavish costumes and will focus on short, dynamic poses. Nice Flaps encourages you to think of drawing as a tool for perception and meditation and to focus on the process rather than the end result while making.

Times: 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. / 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.

WORKSHOP – Drawing with your feelers

In the first half of this workshop, under the guidance of artist Marisa Rappard, you will take a short walk while drawing. Once we arrived in the gardens of the Drawing Center, we continued our drawing activity using various exercises. We closely observe our surroundings and our inner experience, while at the same time allowing our hands to move freely across the paper. Marisa shares her own process of looking and making during the workshop: she starts drawing by putting out her feelers and carefully observes everything.

PERFORMANCE – Collective reading session

During her time as artist-in-residence at the Drawing Centre, artist Alice Marie Martin is writing a series of speculative letters. In these texts, she mixes her everyday reality, such as a walk through Diepenheim or an acquaintance with a stranger, with her own fantasy. Strange, touching and sometimes ominous stories emerge that reference Alice’s emotions, memories and dreams. During a collaborative reading session, she is happy to share these stories with you in an intimate setting.

Times: 1:00 -13:30 pm / 4:30 – 5:00 pm
Language: English
Price: included in entrance ticket

GUIDE – Archetype

In a speculative tour, artist Bart Lunenburg will take you on his quest for the history of the Drawing Centre Diepenheim building. During the tour, we will look at construction drawings in the archive, discuss art historical references and experience the new site-specific work Bart has developed for the exhibition “the sketch, its realization & its lovers. Together we explore what lies behind the white painted walls of the exhibition space and reflect on the complex relationship between (construction) drawing, building and changes over time.

WORKSHOP – Club Cadaver (up to 12 years old)

Join artist Lisa Blaauwbroek’s Club Cadaver drawing workshop with your parent(s) and other participants. We will work on a cadavre exquis: a drawing game where we fold a sheet of paper and take turns drawing. The first person often starts with a “head,” and then the other draughtsmen complete the rest of the body without knowing what their predecessor drew. Let your imagination run wild and discover what crazy characters and strange creatures appear!

PERFORMANCE – Good Job, Good Boy

In this performance, artist Eloy Cruz del Prado retrieves personal childhood memories, referencing themes around intimacy, imagination and class differences. The performance emphasizes the ongoing search for validation, presented in the form of a physically demanding labor activity: three characters bang with great noise on a sculpture from the exhibition “the sketch, its realization & her lovers.

TENTOONSTELLING – the sketch, its realisation & her lovers

Each artwork goes through three phases: the idea, execution and maintenance. The exhibition the sketch, its realization & her lovers focuses on exactly this. In a group exhibition featuring 12 artists, guest curator Caz Egelie explores the sketch as a starting point of something that will have consequences stretching into an unknown future.

WORKSHOP – Layers and fragments. (14+)

During this drawing workshop, under the guidance of artist Lenneke van der Goot, you will work on creating a layered image, combining different materials and stories. You’ll get inspired on a short walk from the Drawing Center to the Gazebo. Along the way, take notes, sketches and photos of what you notice. This material serves as the basis for a fragmented drawing that you will continue to develop during the rest of the activity. Lenneke will share her own process during the workshop: combining images and ideas to bring them together into a whole.

PERFORMANCE – Calligraphic line

The calligraphic line connects the artists of the collective High on Type. During a performance, they collaborate live on a piece of writing art, focusing on the process rather than the end result. Each time, the trio switches roles, questioning authorship and focusing on one goal: working together to achieve a balanced result.

Times: 5:15 – 5:45 p.m.
Price: included in entrance ticket

WALKING – Drawing with your feet in the land

Join artist G.C. Heemskerk for a walk through the nature of Diepenheim. During this walk, we will be inspired by the environment and share anecdotes, memories and dreams together. Through these exchanges, we learn from and about each other, for example, about different plant species, personal stories or local history.

OPEN STUDIO – Alice Marie Martin

Artist Alice Marie Martin resides as artist-in-residence at Drawing Centre Diepenheim. During Drawing Garden, she invites you to take a look at her studio and gain insight into their process. During her working period in Diepenheim, Alice starts a correspondence with her home base of Lyon in France. In this correspondence, she wants to examine the parallels between writing and drawing, and explore how these methods of notation can capture a location.

PERFORMANCE – Garden Notes: our common ground?

Performance is always taking place in and around the garden: among the shrubs, in the air and underground. It is an interplay of multiple species, a dance with and around each other. Artists Eleni Kamma & MOSs Social Club welcome you to an interactive script reading, where you are invited to step into the skin of another being and explore the world of the (un)known. As we wander through the garden, we wonder: to whom does this space belong?
